Guess who won? First of all I have to say that they tricked everyone into this! They called up 10 people all from different countries to volunteer. As soon as the Baluts showed up one of the guys ran. I thought, what the heck. I love a little competition, especially if its a dare to do something that everyone thinks is gross. So I took the poor guy's place. In the end, Charles from South Africa and yours truly tied in a Guiness Book Record challenging very few seconds. The prize? A first edition Every Nation Umbrella. Wow. I was shocked and blessed at the generosity of the missions office. =) Unfortunately, the prize did not make it to being the FIRST EVER Every Nation umbrella in India. Didn't fit in my suitcase and looked too much like a weapon to be brought on board the plane. How was the balut, you ask? Well, it tasted fine. The secret seems to be found in one single sentence. She has made up at least a thousand in her lifetime but this was the first time we intentionally did it and wrote it down at that moment.  She gave me the words instantly almost without even thinking. I wrote them down. I read them back. She corrected me on the finer points.. It was "my God" not just "God"...etc...  I played a chord on the piano and pretty much just followed her wherever she went with it.  Now she has her first "real" song at the age of 6 that she can teach to anyone and we all sing it together.  Here it is. "Mommy, will you pray for me?" Somewhat incoherantly I prayed a one liner and fell back asleep.  After a few minutes.."Mommy, Im still having bad dreams.  Will you pray for me and and sing me "Come into my heart, Lord Jesus, from Psalty Kids Praise?".  Okay. One line prayer again and the first line of the song.  Snore... After a few more minutes... "Mommy, will you sing me ALL of Psalty Kids praise songs now?" I began laughing and then...we were both snoring once again. I was touched that at her little age when she wakes up with bad dreams it is so natural for her to ask for prayer, to believe that it will work and to want worship songs sung to soothe her. If you dont know what Im talking about, read my first blog entitled "Ode to our new Airconditioner".  In short, we got the first bill.  And the good news is that even though the bill exactly DOUBLED our usual electricity extortion payment we are still Praising God!  Its definitely worth it being able to sleep with an A.C. at night AND the Bible tells us that when God blesses us (like with an A.C.) He adds no trouble with it! Wed, 13 Jun 2007 14:43:30 -0000 Loving God and Loving People If there's one thing I've always wanted to teach my kids it's how to love God and love people.  Sometimes I think we aren't doing a very good job of it. Honestly, it's not easy to be a good example for your children. Especially when they are looking at you every second and seeing your failures as well as your victories.  We tell our kids to be kind and help people. Yet immediately after that we almost scowl at the beggar asking us for money. We tell our kids to say positive things about people. Yet an instant later we are complaining to each other about the worker who stole money out of our closet when he was supposed to be installing our airconditioner.  We ask our kids to speak softly to each other and the next moment we are raising our voices about something short lived and silly. My name is Brooke. And I’m confessing here and now that I’m a 5 minute tourist.   I’m the one who, with best friend in tow, journeyed three days by train across China to see the Great Wall. It happened to be January, which is the worst time of year, and we were so frozen that we had to hang out in KFC (yes, there’s a KFC at the Great Wall!) just to get warm enough to attempt the climb. The steps were so steep and uneven and the weather so cold that by the time we got to the top we only walked down the “lane” for about 15 minutes before we made a speedy return to KFC, afraid we might collapse from weariness and our toes fall off from frostbite.
